NOTES FROM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSION
Facilitators: Sally Gibson, Anne McKee Present: Merry Bower, Emily Dust-Nimsakont, Carole Green, Charlene Redman Creating an active and motivated statewide technical services round table: Nebraska Technical Services Round Table: - Largest round table within the Nebraska Library Association:
- encompasses acquisitions, collection development, cataloging and classification, preservation, serials control, interlibrary loan and document delivery
- Friendly group, newcomers feel welcomed
- Recruits new members at NLA annual meeting
- Maintains a core of active members; also finds opportunities to involve new members
- Tries to offer 4-5 broad-range programs at annual Nebraska Library Association conference, including a business meeting
- Has a “Suggest a Program Topic” feature on its website
- Spring meeting: moves around the state; may pair with another round table
- Strives to offer 2 candidates for each office vacancy (one candidate from public libraries, one from academic)
- Offers online webinars through the Nebraska Library Commission (cataloging certificate program)
- Blog not used much
- Visibility: has table at NLA annual meeting; badge ribbons for TSRT members

- Be specific in letters of agreement: number of nights/type of hotel, per diem food, transportation, airline reservations at least 20 days in advance, no first-class flights, driving/mileage, no room service/no bar, etc.
Potential grant sources for sponsoring programs: - What organizations might relate to your topic?
- MPLA? o Your own library?
- NLA TSRT received grants from Houchen Bindery and University of Nebraska Press for one of its programs
Possible program topics: - How leaders come out of Technical Services (a number of deans, GWLA directors have TS background)
- What else can you do with your MLS?
- NLA TSRT has sponsored:
- preservation course through the University of Missouri-Columbia
- pre-conference on the value of a book (taught by someone from book arts program at University of Illinois?)
Professional development, networking, mentoring: - Get involved with local organizations, national groups that are easy to break into (such as NASIG, OLAC, etc.) ·
- Use your contacts (other catalogers, vendors, etc.)
- Join ALA New Members Round Table
- Nominations committees: easy to get on, make yourself useful, use those contacts
- Volunteer to be a session recorder
- Resume, CV: update at least once a year. McKee recommends updating CV first of each month to maintain currency
- Cover letter: Keep to one page; customize to particular job
- Remember every job is in “sales”
- Management courses are valuable ·
- Many organizations (NASIG, etc.) have mentor/mentee programs
