Creating an active and motivated statewide technical services round table:

Nebraska Technical Services Round Table:
  • Largest round table within the Nebraska Library Association:
    • encompasses acquisitions, collection development, cataloging and classification, preservation, serials control, interlibrary loan and document delivery
  • Friendly group, newcomers feel welcomed
  • Recruits new members at NLA annual meeting
  • Maintains a core of active members; also finds opportunities to involve new members
  • Tries to offer 4-5 broad-range programs at annual Nebraska Library Association conference, including a business meeting
    • Has a “Suggest a Program Topic” feature on its website
    • Spring meeting: moves around the state; may pair with another round table
  • Strives to offer 2 candidates for each office vacancy (one candidate from public libraries, one from academic)
  • Offers online webinars through the Nebraska Library Commission (cataloging certificate program)
  • Blog not used much
  • Visibility: has table at NLA annual meeting; badge ribbons for TSRT members
Honorariums:
  • For guidance see NASIG’s document on its compensation and reimbursement policy: http://www.nasig.org/conference_compensation.cfm
  • Be specific in letters of agreement: number of nights/type of hotel, per diem food, transportation, airline reservations at least 20 days in advance, no first-class flights, driving/mileage, no room service/no bar, etc.
Potential grant sources for sponsoring programs:
  • What organizations might relate to your topic?
  • MPLA? o Your own library?
  • NLA TSRT received grants from Houchen Bindery and University of Nebraska Press for one of its programs
Possible program topics:
  • How leaders come out of Technical Services (a number of deans, GWLA directors have TS background)
  • What else can you do with your MLS?
  • NLA TSRT has sponsored:
    • preservation course through the University of Missouri-Columbia
    • pre-conference on the value of a book (taught by someone from book arts program at University of Illinois?)
Professional development, networking, mentoring:
  • Get involved with local organizations, national groups that are easy to break into (such as NASIG, OLAC, etc.) ·
  • Use your contacts (other catalogers, vendors, etc.)
  • Join ALA New Members Round Table
  • Nominations committees: easy to get on, make yourself useful, use those contacts
  • Volunteer to be a session recorder
  • Resume, CV: update at least once a year. McKee recommends updating CV first of each month to maintain currency
  • Cover letter: Keep to one page; customize to particular job
  • Remember every job is in “sales”
  • Management courses are valuable ·
  • Many organizations (NASIG, etc.) have mentor/mentee programs
